MISTAKE #1: GETTING STUCK IN THE PAST
“Generally, people that are unhappy with their age try to mimic the look they had 10 years ago – but that only makes them look older! Rather than trying to make yourself look younger, remember that makeup is about maximising your beauty. Steer clear of dated techniques: thick lip liner, heavy black under-eye liner and over-plucked eyebrows, as these will all add years to your face.”
MISTAKE #2: USING THE WRONG MAKEUP BASE
“Heavy foundations will cake in fine lines and enhance them, so as your skin ages look for a moisturising foundation with a lightweight texture. Avoid using too much foundation that can sit in wrinkles. On the topic of base: skip matte powder altogether. Instead, use products with a bit of shine – dewy, glowing skin will look younger than matte skin.”
MISTAKE #3: USING THE WRONG SHADE OF BLUSH
“A flushed complexion can instantly freshen your face, but using the wrong shade of blush to achieve it, will do the exact opposite. Avoid using brown coloured blush, which can look dull and muddy. A peachy tone on the other hand will add warmth, neutralising and brightening your cheeks. To add a youthful glow to my older clients’ skin, I always dab a bit of blush on the apple of their cheeks.”
MISTAKE #4: USING GLITTERY OR SHIMMERY EYE SHADOW
“Using glittering or shimmering powder-based eye shadows is a big mistake. Because of the texture, these products can stick in fine lines and creases, which only magnifies your wrinkles! These might work when you’re young, but cut back as you get older. I suggest using a satin or matte finish around your eyes instead.”
MISTAKE #5: THINKING MORE IS MORE
“Don’t overcomplicate your makeup. Go for a look that is simple: use a great quality mascara, a hydrating foundation, peach-toned blush and a natural looking lipstick - you don’t need much more to get a beautiful, natural and fresh look. Put away the heavy-duty makeup. As you get older, it’s about less is more.”
